This is the first study published on long-established estates designed with tenure mix in mind. The research looks at three mixed-use estates 20 years on. It analyses the nature and extent of household relationships in these mixed communities, seeks to understand the significance of the planned environment in facilitating such relationships and studies the experiences of children living in these areas. It finds that residents of all tenures on these estates expressed satisfaction that mixed tenure had produced ordinary and civilised communities. The researchers suggest that appropriate planning and household policies should be used to produce a genuine tenure mix in popular areas.
