Summary: Conference paper from COBRA RICS Construction and Building Research Conference. Researches the design of space heating and ventilation to meet the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) targets for detached housing. Aims to establish if these new standards are attainable in a mass build context. Also investigates to find out if the Code Level 3 can be reached by improving the envelope alone and the impact that low carbon dioxide emission envelopes can have on space heating and ventilation systems. Concludes that for the Code Level 3 to be met with the envelope only, the standards of construction will have to be much higher. To succeed a mass build of low energy houses, training will be necessary for construction workers. Developers will also need to educate house buyers to these systems put into place with operation and maintenance instructions.
