Provides chartered surveyors in England and Wales with background information on the issues involved in flooding and flood defence. The primary focus is on flooding in or from rural areas, however it is recognised that rural and urban areas are linked through the floodplain and the consequences of action within one area can cause flooding elsewhere. The paper provides a guide to help assess the consequence of changes in climate and rainfall patterns, along with government policies for property and land management. The implications in regard to the valuation of property interests, insurance and strategy for rural businesses are also discussed. Some information does not apply in Wales.
