For instance, the US Conference of Mayors recently declared that brownfield redevelopment is the country's most important environmental and economic challenge. In 1995 a new urban environmental agenda was promoted, which merged cleanup of contaminated sites with economic redevelopment. Since 1995, over 400 grants have been awarded.
