Power trip
Series: Estates Gazette ; (0348) 29 November 2003, 118-119(2)Publication details: 2003Subject(s): Summary: Discusses the problems occuring with the recent power cuts that have affected the USA, London and parts of Scandinavia. Sweden and Denmark suffered major disruptions as repairs to their grid took hours which left many essential public services without power and reliant on standby power generators. A survey of 50 large uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) showed that 2% of power cuts lasted more than 30 minutes which would be beyond the ability of the largest UPS battery. Another survey of 100 UPS systems showed that quite often there was no diesel generator installed leaving computer systems open to a complete loss of supply in power failures lasting more than a few minutes. The UK's gross power consumption is set to increase over the coming years which means that organisations need to invest in power protection systems and to keep up with technological changes| Item type | Current library | Call number | Copy number | Status | Barcode | |
