Government's responses include: ensuring that mixed-use developments offer a realistic choice of access by walking, cycling and public transport; encouraging the provision of day-to-day facilities in local centres within reach by walking; encouraging local authorities to identify key routes and networks for walking and to create more direct and safe walking routes; and the importance of high quality urban design in new developments.
