This guidance aims to explain the phased introduction of European codes of practice (Eurocodes) for civil and structural engineering. These aim to: provide common design criteria and standards; provide a common understanding of the design of structures between all parties in a construction project; facilitate the exchange of construction services within the EU; facilitate the use and marketing of construction products; enable design calculations to be made accurately; be a common basis for research and development; allow the preparation of common design aids and software; increase the competitiveness of the EU construction industry.
