Under the Directive, unsolicited commercial email and text messages can only be sent if the recipient has agreed in advance and firms who use cookies and similar internet tracking devices will be required to provide information on these devices. The regulations will affect direct marketing, safety, user and traffic data, location data and call services. Brought into force in the UK by the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.
