Examines the issues relating to the re-use of rural buildings for business use as favoured by government planning policy and the increasing popularity of rural areas as business locations. Questions whether this re-use process aids sustainable development (as believed by government) as the process comes into potential conflict with government sustainable travel policy and also finds debatable that rural conversions actually create local employment in rural areas. Argues whether the re-use policy fits in with other government policies for urban regeneration. Looks at the reasons why firms choose converted buildings in rural locations and seeks to examine planning and business sustainability in terms of travel and employment patterns. The findings are based on a questionnaire sent to businesses based in converted rural buildings.
