Reviews the work of the Laboratorio Scientifico della Misericordia in Venice , where investigations are providing answers to the problems of pollution and where diverse cleaning methods are being developed. The findings of the UK`s Building Effects Review Group and of the USA`s National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program are noted.
