The survey shows that an influx of labour from Eastern Europe is changing the face of the UK construction industry and comfortably bridging the skills gap brought about by sustained growth in the sector. The skills gap has fallen to its lowest level in two years, with only 38% of chartered surveyors reporting difficulties in recruiting trades people compared to a recent high of 45% in the third quarter of 2003. Growth in the construction industry continues to be well above average with 18% more chartered quantity surveyors reporting increases in workload than falls.
