The deleterious effects of urban air pollution on stone buildings is known to have increased during the past thirty years. Such degradation has caused the need to preserve and protect those structures which have a high cultural value. This in turn had led to a significant amount of research in this area. The nature of urban pollution itself has changed, from the combustion products of coal to that of traffic exhausts. It is in this latter area where this research lies. The study focuses on the role of diesel particulates in the decay of historic stone structures. It is hoped to study the physical and chemical changes and mechanisms that result from the presence of diesel particulates on stone surfaces, and also how this form of pollution may interact with previous pollution products.
