Provides draft guidance to local authorities to help them understand why they need to carry out accommodation assessments, the issues that they should consider, who the assessment should cover and examples of good practice. The assessment of gypsy and traveller accommodation needs is a statutory requirement under the Housing Act 2004 s225 which amends the Housing Act 1985 s8 and is due to come into force in 2006. S225 also requires local authorities to produce gypsy and traveller accommodation strategies.
