Sets out national policy for sports and recreation in urban and rural settings and for the provision and protection of open space within and on the edges of settlements. Introduces national minimum standards for open space in new developments. When finalised it will replace "National Planning Policy Guideline No. 11: sport, physical recreation and open space" (ISBN 074805488X). "Planning Advice Note No. 65: planning and open space" (ISBN 0755905334) containing best practice advice on planning for open space and providing a typology of open space, remains in place and should be read in conjunction with this consultation draft. Comments are required by 3 November 2006.
