smartLIFE affordable housing project launched in Fenland

Construction on a pioneering housing project in Fenland began on 4 September 2006. The construction will emphasise sustainability and environmental performance as well as comfortable community living. The project has been developed to demonstrate how modern methods of construction can be used to alleviate housing shortages in growth areas. Every step of the construction process will be assessed, such as build speed, build quality, the sustainability of the construction process and the post-occupancy performance of the resulting houses, including energy efficiency. The development will comprise 106 new homes in the Cambridgeshire towns of March and Chatteris for both private buyers and housing association tenants. Expected completion is March 2007.
