Living roofs and walls technical report, supporting London Plan policy [electronic resource]
- London Design For London 2008
Argues that using walls as vertical gardens and roofs as gardens or leisure spaces will help London adapt to the effects of climate change. They will provide a cooling effect during hot summers as well as reducing the velocity of water run-off. Additionally they provide wider environmental benefits. The use of roof vegetation also reduces carbon emissions through evapotranspiration cooling, and by providing an insulating effect. Addresses barriers to the idea including lack of policy framework and expertise, maintenance, costs, fire and structural issues. Research findings support development of the idea within Supplementary Planning Guidance and the London Plan.
