Discusses and illustrates how the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be a useful tool for the design and maintenance of buildings to be refurbished according to a sustainable methodology. Use the case study of Atlantic College in Wales. Shows how a small design practice, by using Archicad 3D BIM and Ecotect building performance analysis software, can compete with larger practices in the quality of services provided. Demonstrates that refurbishing existing buildings is more economical and sustainable than new built. Examines how recording existing buildings in 3D using BIM has been found economical in subsequent facilities management and conservation management.
