English Nature has found that almost half of England's sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs) are in need of improvement. The study, the first of its kind, covered over 1m hectares of coastline and countryside and is intended to monitor progress towards government targets to ensure that 95% of all SSSIs are in a favourable condition by 2010.
