Proposals for implementing the European Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Directive (Directive 2001/42/EC) were released by government. The new provisions ensure that significant environmental effects are assessed at a much earlier stage in the process, during the preparation of a plan and before decisions on key issues such as alternative sites for development have been made. The consultation document on implementation of SEA Directive (2001/42/EC) is available on the ODPM website at http://www.planning.odpm.gov.uk.
