Retail sales have been robust in the first quarter of 2004 with March continuing at the same level as February, when the headline growth rate of the Retail Sales Index reached its highest level for 20 months. The volume of retail sales in the three months to March 2004 was 1.9% higher than in the previous three months. Average weekly sales for March were £4.4bn, 5.3% higher than the same month in 2003.
