DEFRA has published "The first soil action plan for England: 2004-2006", setting out a three-year programme designed to afford soils greater protection and improved management within a wide range of land uses. DEFRA will report on progress in November 2004 with further reports annually. The action plan is available at http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/landliability/ soil/actionplan.htm.
