New research by Halifax shows across Great Britain there are around 860 000 empty homes, 3.4% of the total dwelling stock . Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester top the empty homes league with northwest England the worst region with nearly 5% of its dwelling stock empty. In England 84% of empty homes are privately owned but private sector homes usually stay empty for less than six months.
