Fire escape lifts from tall buildings
- 2004
- Building 269(8335) 4 June 2004, 11(1) .
The government is planning to allow the evacuation by lift of tall buildings in the event of a fire or terrorist attack. This follows a review of the Building Regulations Approved Document B after the attack on the World Trade Centre towers in 2001. Engineers believe that allowing evacuees to use both stairs and lifts in an emergency may cut evacuation time by 40%. Lift design would need reviewing to develop a new type of fire-proof and smoke-proof lift.
