Criteria to improve building standards

Morris, H.

Criteria to improve building standards - 2004 - Planning (for the Natural and Built Environment) (1571) 28 May 2004, 14-15(2) .

Examines the Sustainable Building Task Group's "Better buildings - better lives" report (J126716), which calls for the rapid development of more environmentally friendly house building in the UK. Its key recommendations include: the introduction of a national code for sustainable building based on the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM); government revision of the Building Regulations to achieve a 25% water consumption reduction; 25% energy efficiency improvement by 2005; and to specify at least 10% reused, reclaimed or recycled materials in building projects. Relates the report's proposals to the final version of PPS1, which places sustainable development at the heart of the planning system. The report is available at www.dti.gov.uk.
