Draws on data from the latest "Survey of mortgage lenders", jointly managed by the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the ODPM, to provide an overview of the mortgage market in 2003, covering mortgage lending and mortgage, property and borrower characteristics. Highlights of the survey are: 2003 was a record year for mortgage lending with remortgaging accounting for 44% of the total, first-time buyers reached a record low and their average age increased to 34, deposits rose by more than house prices and capital repayment mortgages remained the most popular mortgage type with borrowers switching between fixed-rate and variable-rate mortgages according to short-term cost.
