The second in a series of articles looking at materials in their historical settings, explores varieties of stone and its use in a restoration case study. Emphasises the strong regional nature of its use and refers to the ways in which historic craftsmen worked with different types of stone. Points out how old stone buildings were often cannibalised for their materials, whereas the trend now is to conserve an existing structure. This has lead to increases in stone quarrying.
