Despite expectations of a pick-up after July's slowdown, the latest quarterly CBI "Distributive trades survey" shows that August 2004 was slow too. Retailers cite successive interest rate rises and August's unpredictable weather as factors. Some 32% of firms said that sales were down during the month.
