Report on the economic impact of withdrawal from development and extension of light railway systems in the wake of the transport white paper. Looks at responses to the cancellation of tram system extensions in Greater Manchester and new tramline proposals in Leeds and south Hampshire on cost grounds. Light rail has not been dealt a death blow as proposals have been submitted for two new Supertram lines to serve Sheffield and Rotherham. Tables cover light rail passenger journeys from 1996/97 to date and details of the cancelled projects. The "Future of transport" white paper is available at www.dft.gov.uk.
