Businesses in Kingston upon Thames became the first in the UK to vote to raise their own taxes to spend on the public realm. Shops and services in the southwest London borough voted to establish the UK's first Business Improvement District (BID). A BID is a defined geographical area in which all business ratepayers contribute a levy into a communal pot that is then used to improve the public realm.
