Reports on the government housing market renewal Pathfinder policy for improving areas of low demand in cities in northern England and the Midlands and the role of mortgage lenders in this process. Based on research for an ODPM commissioned report "Home ownership solutions for low demand areas", the article examines in detail mortgage lending in the Pathfinder areas including such issues as mortgage arrears, negative equity, home owners views of their neighbourhoods and housing finance and the mutual development of strategies by Pathfinder boards and lenders. Concludes that the mortgage market operates in a positive way in Pathfinder areas and has much to offer in helping measures to tackle the problems of low demand areas succeed.
