A review of the research carried out for the RICS/Demos report "Northern Soul: culture, creativity and quality of place in Newcastle and Gateshead" (ISBN 1841801178) by the author who carried out the research. The report attempted to explain what creates a buzz in a city like Newcastle and how it can be retained, without overheating or losing momentum. The research found that regeneration strategies succeeded when they were locally rooted and worked with the local community rather than imposed and artificial.
