Surveying and Dating Post-Glacial Lake Shorelines in New Zealand [electronic resource]

Natural fluctuations in Earth’s climate, between cold ‘glacial’
and warm ‘interglacial’ periods, produce a wide range of
changes to the Earth’s surface. One of these changes is
related to glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), which is a
phenomenon whereby the loading and unloading of the
Earth’s crust and mantle due to the growth and retreat
of large ice sheets induces regional deformation. The towns of Queenstown, Glenorchy, Frankton, and
Kingston are located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
They are popular tourist destinations and have significant
flood and earthquake hazards. This study was focused on
identifying evidence of post-glacial rebound and a history
of lake level changes that may influence ongoing hazards in
the region.
