US engineer Brown and Root is negotiating a unique contract worth up to £100m to revitalise London`s Docklands Light Railway, in which payment of a significant part of the sum is dependent on the performance of the line. This is understood to be the first time that a major public building or civil engineering contract has been awarded on the basis that money is withheld until the success of the work is tested.
