Reviews the pressures on the UK planning system, coming from Europe, where more proactive and integrated styles of planning are in operation. Concerns are raised that within the Single Market planning systems may be seen to be barriers to trade; and there is a need to consider the ways that different planning systems and European laws have an effect at local level. The European Commission has prepared a compendium of the systems of the member states, co-ordinated from the UK by Chesterton and the University of Central England.
