With reference to caselaw, the author reviews the current position with regard to mortgage valuations , considering issues raised by some of the rulings made, including the question of establishing contracts between valuers and lending institutions, valuer`s liability and the rule in Hedley Byrne . Concludes with a suggestion that the lender of money on residential mortgage security should be obliged to commission a survey at least to the RICS House Buyers Report and Valuation standard, and satisfy themselves that the borrower knows what he is buying.
