Following Government statements that developments in green belt will be strenuously resisted this article, firstly, reviews the development of the green belt concept and asserts that it is essential to maintain it. However,it contends it would be more appropriate to consider proposed shopping and leisure development in green belt in the context of whether positive benefits would be derived, as opposed to outright rejection of such schemes. On the basis of statistical evidence, an increase in enhanced green belt areas with public access, would be a positive gain. Includes a table detailing land use within the approved metropolitan green belt in 1960.
