Outlines the programme `Superfund`, in use since 1980 to clean up hazardous sites in the USA. As the time approaches for re-authorisation of the superfund, this article highlights some of its flaws, and the differences and similarities between the American and British systems of regulating contaminated land, and how both countries can learn from each other.
