As part of the decision in a case concerning public access to the river Derwent, the Court of Appeal found that the Rights of Way Act 1932 applies to rivers as well as footpaths, even if the banks are in private ownership, and can be used for boating if there can be proved a twenty year period of unchallenged navigation.
