A wide variety of independent issues exist that are key to the successful introduction of a geographic information system operating with a large scale digital map base. The common themes linking these topics are data compatibility and communications, both of which inevitably focus on standards. This article sets out the issues which must be resolved, in the interests of all users, before truly integrated systems and full exchange of data will operate in practice.
