In this article the author attempts to illustrate the value of database management systems, DBMS , to the agricultural industry. Firstly the author explains what a database actually is, its structure and the ways in which a DBMS differs from a conventional file processing system. The advantages and disadvantages of the computer system are also identified.The author then turns his attention to the capacity of DBMS packages, how to sort and merge data, data input and output and additional functions a database can perform. Consideration is also given to integrated packages and efficient data handling. Concludes with a summary of the main advantages of using a database.
