Describes the differences which occur in Japanese building contracts, where claims are very rare. With more and more involvement by foreign contractors, the need to understand the difference in the way contracts are drawn up, is increasingly important and in this article the author identifies some of the main variations where the emphasis is on shorter, less precise contracts with more scope for negotiation .
