This paper, submitted as a PhD thesis , gives the results of a recent research project which set out to measure the ability of individual construction professionals to carry out a structural survey . The principal determinants of ability are identified and variations in the results between different professions highlighted. Ways of closing the `ability gap` are then discussed. References.
