A DoE consultation paper proposes significant changes to the sound control provisions of the building regulations . It is acknowledged that excessive noise transmission through party walls is a health hazard. Reports on sub-standard sound insulation in converted flats, over which there is still no statutory control. In many cases, responsibility for ensuring an adequate level of sound insulation is imposed by conditions in planning permission . Briefly reviews recommendations for treating party walls and floors to produce adequate sound insulation.
