To justify the publication of a new engineering contract , the article describes the eclectic origins and development of the ICE Standard Conditions of Contract , suggesting a fresh approach is needed. It then introduces the new contract and describes the contents of the 10 volumes available. The authors`s comments on particular aspects are enumerated with an attempt to analyse strengths and weaknesses. The conclusion conveys the author`s favourable response to the reform, and pays tribute to the thought and innovation of the compilers.
