A five part series discusses various aspects of steel and concrete construction with the aim of guiding the architect to an early and informed decision on the most appropriate materials and methods. The first looks at commerical long-span structures, traditionally favouring steel, concentrating on materials and the logic of design, and the second part describes examples in practice. The possibilities of rapid building in concrete are assessed in the third, and the fourth introduces imaginative developments in concrete pigmentation and texture. Finally, the relative merits of both steel and concrete are compared, in column, under a series of mutual characteristic headings.
