After the rapid development of information technology throughout the 1980s, controls are being introduced by the European Commission to regulate the use of visual display units and other screens . The contents of directive 90/270/EEC do not generally exceed current consensus on best practice, and are summarised in this article. Initially, however, the risks to health arising from screens are outlined and the enforcement provisions, inspection and penalties are examined, with reference particularly to architects` offices.
