The possibilities of geographical information systems for land use planning are demonstrated in this article, with emphasis placed on their flexibility and interactive nature. The capacity to integrate data, interrogate databases and create maps enables the execution of tasks such as the definition of current conditions of land use, the monitoring of change and the compilation of future options.
