Reports on trials to restore to farmland a sand and gravel quarry at Great Sunnings , near Upminster in Essex following backfilling with industrial and commercial degradable waste. Previous experience shows that adverse effects of landfill gases causes crop damage and lowering of yields in the early years. To counteract this problem, the present trials involved the installation of a gas venting system designed to prevent the upward migration of landfill gases from fill into soil zones.
