This paper, which won the 1986 RICS Yorkshire Branch Minerals Division Prize Paper, discusses the causes of actual subsidence in excess of that predicted, based upon a subject case, involving extraction of a panel of virgin coal by longwall retreat, subsidence considerably exceeded and was not in the form predicted.The possible causes are examined under the headings of the effects of permo-triassic strata and the speed of advance.
