Syndicated loans became popular as tools for bringing together large-scale borrowing requirements, availability of money and banking facilities in the boom years of the 1980s when demand by property developers and investors to borrow money to finance projects, was at its peak. This article examines the background to the loans and highlights problems for borrowers.
